On an unseasonably warm day the Freshwater section of the Lowestoft Sea Anglers tackled Barford's Willow lake. With the carp taking advantage of the sunshine, it proved difficult to distract them from sunbathing to feed. One of the more successful anglers was Sam Blowers (pictured left), who managed to tempt enough fish to finish second. Others had to make do with getting sunburnt. With the next match at Hinderclay's Reed pool, let's hope the sun doesn't shine too brightly! |

After the struggle on Willow lake, a few more fish were hoped for in the second Sea Angler's match. Unfortunately, the fish again were not playing ball. The muggy conditions didn't help, and for the first couple of hours very little was caught. A breeze across the lake finally woke up some of the inhabitants, with C. Scarff taking carp and a bream on the method feeder to put together a winning bag.

Another hot day greeted the Sea Anglers at Marsh Farm. The carp were again unwilling to feed, prefering to bask in the 'No fishing' areas of the lake. Those fishing for the smaller species had a lot of action though. Skimmers, rudd and roach were the main target, with the odd tench showing up too. H. Jermy landed the prettiest fish of the day, a very large goldfish! C. Scarff made it two wins in a row, fishing sweetcorn on the pole to catch mainly skimmers.

On an increasingly windy day, the Sea Anglers struggled to catch from a venue which usually produces a lot of small fish if nothing else. W. Spooner drew peg 9 and, with a reed bed to fish amongst, took carp shallow to finish well ahead of everyone else.

With bags of roach and bream anticipated, the Sea Anglers arrived at Langley full of hope. Five hours later, the hope was that the next match on the River Bure is nothing like this. It was hard to believe fish lived in the river, and even harder to get a bite. S. Gooderham found the odd roach and skimmer, while others resorted to fishing for eels just for some action. Even these were in short supply. Maybe the beach is a better option?

One of these days the fish will be where they're supposed to be. The large shoals of bream did not materialise, although a few were caught. A changing tide after an hour killed the sport for some. Only a couple of real 'slabs' were caught, the biggest 6lb 9oz by eventual winner, master S. Scarff.

With food on offer, S. Gooderham was always going to enjoy himself. His only problem was finding time in between fish to eat his bacon roll. Even that didn't stop him from taking victory, using a method feeder with luncheon meat cast towards the island. Elsewhere on the lake, H. Brighty took a different approach, deciding not to spoil his day by catching fish. By fishing on the island, his aim was achieved. He was promptly hammered by grandson S. Blowers.

R. Grimson |

With S. Gooderham on a hot streak, and on his 'home' peg, there was only going to be one result in this match. Anyone would think he was a troll, always hanging around the bridge. A feeder cast to the island accounted for numerous carp, but the swing tip used last time was handed over to A. Scarff. On the other side of the lake, 'The Buddha' R. Grimson was also pulling out carp. He was eventually overtaken into second place by W. Tuttle on the next peg.

C. Scarff |

Having waited patiently for C. Scarff to arrive after his shower, the Sea Anglers set off for Oby Dyke. S. Scarff brought along his make-up bag for the draw. With an increasing amount of debris flowing past, including a man-made raft, it was difficult to hold bottom. W. Tuttle came out on top with a bream and roach bag. The Eel-bobbing Buddha had a less enjoyable time. He was even heard swearing at a boat! Naughty Buddha!

Maybe the thought of food was too much for some on a windy day at Hinderclay. It certainly didn't slow down R. Sustins, who got off to a good start fishing next to the Laughing Buddha. The Buddha started well too, but of course it didn't last. A late run of fish caught right under the bank saw B. Blowers finish second. The food and drink supplied was a welcome distraction for some, eh Stan? Some supplied their own beverages, which led to entertainment for the Buddha bank.

Fairly uneventful as matches go. The carp were happy to swim around in the surface layers, but only W. Spooner could manage to tempt more than a couple with red maggots (yes, we could see the successful bait, didn't make any difference though). The Buddha was out of sight and mind for most, although a good impression was made on peg 13. With C. Scarff struggling so badly he was beaten by A. Scarff (it wasn't even Father's Day!), the lead has now changed hands. It's all down to the last match, will the roach be hungry?
12th September - River Yare (Beauchamp Arms)

With only 5 Sea Anglers at the last match of the year,
the fish were going to have less choice on whose bait to ignore. The roach
were plentiful, but not very big in C. Scarff's case. Fishing the pole with
caster and maggot provided a lot of bites, but not enough weight to oust W.
Spooner from the top spot. A. Scarff caught well on the feeder at the start,
and decent fish too. Unfortunately the bites dried up in the middle of the
match (what a shame!). The Buddha took third place, with R. Sustins fourth and
the Buddha's apprentice finishing last. Thanks to all the participants in this
year's competition. Without you, this page would be very boring! All characters names are fictitious, and any association with real persons is accidental.
