Casting Competitions

Our own casting competition will take place on Sunday 28th September. Meet in Oulton Broad opposite the Red Herring at 8am, before heading out to a field near Rookery Park (the exact field is not known yet). For details phone Mark Sherwood on 07775 663860. We have also been asked to mention an event taking place the following weekend, 4th-5th October, near Browston Hall. Anglia Sportscast will be holding two days of casting on a field by Browston Road, Bradwell from 9.00am to 5.00pm. There will be banners up in the field so it should be easy to spot. Zziplex rods will be available to try with reels, line and leads supplied. There will be a raffle, with a top prize of a Zziplex M4 (£400 worth!) donated by Terry Carroll.

Heroes On The Beach

Just another match on the North Beach turned into something far more serious on Tuesday 12th August. A young lady was seen wading out into the sea by our Match Secretary and Andy Crowe. After standing in the breakers knee-deep for some time she sat down. The sea was quite rough and concern grew for her safety. As Andy and a member of the public made their way towards her she laid back under the water. The two of them managed to get her out of the sea, not before being bowled-over by the waves. An ambulance was soon on the scene to take her away. She was lucky there are some people crazy enough to be on the beach fishing. Well done to Andy and his fellow rescuer.

'Brusher' Alive And Well

Having lost contact with one of our long-serving members for a while, it is good to know that he is safe and well in Dereham. If anyone would like to know how to get in touch with him please speak to the Secretary or Arthur.

Boat Trip

A trip on the Southern elle has been booked for Saturday 30th August. The boat will leave at 7.30pm from Oulton Broad and return at 10.30pm. There is a bar on the boat, along with live music. The price is £12 per person. Contact the Secretary to book your place.

Casting Competition

A reminder that the casting competition is not far away. It is due to take place on Sunday 28th September. Details will appear here and in the Journal once confirmation of the date and venue are made.

Pontins Week

Helpers are still required for the week in September, especially with moving of raffle prizes every evening. If you can lend a hand contact either the Secretary or Arthur. As far as numbers are concerned, we are filling up slowly with a month to go. There are 90 down for the freshwater, 19 for the pier, 13 for the boats and 14 on the beach. Sarah from Barford is organising something extra for the Saturday night when names are taken....

Bass Pictures Making Ammo Jealous

Having suffered a Fathers Day nightmare at Bergh Apton, Ammo now has to put up with photos of bass appearing everywhere. Keep them coming! Tim caught his in the two rod match and was with Bradley when he had his at Trimmingham. Any chance of a few lessons for next Fathers Day? There is another bass on the Saltwater Results page.

The Chief Can't Stop Catching!

As a warm-up to the start of the freshwater matches, Brian Watson had a session at Marsh Trail lakes. It has improved since our last visit if the fish Brian caught are anything to go by. Unfortunately the unexpected strain put on his tackle made his trip to Barford quite expensive (read the freshwater report). The photos are on the left, enjoy the new way of seeing them.

AGM

Only twenty at the AGM this year, obviously Beckham's 100th cap was more important! After paying our respects to Albert Hudson the meeting commenced. Arthur and Stan gave their reports as usual. Can't remember anything they said, sorry! The Gassy Cook shield did another round of the table (still waiting for some silverware), but Stan refused to touch a trophy he hasn't won. The Labour Party Cup clashing with a club match after Christmas was the only matter that had to be resolved. It was decided to keep the Cup match on the Sunday as it didn't then clash with another Open match on New Years Day. After talk of Honorariums, Mark Sherwood became Assistant Match Secretary. All other Committee members stayed in their current roles. The Lowestoft Festival and Junior Festival dates were discussed. The Lowestoft Festival will now be held a week earlier, as yet again it has clashed with another match. The Junior Festival will be held in September to try and attract more participants. Our Freshwater Secretary had plenty to say, but again I wasn't listening! He did say he has two matches already booked for 2009 (Really? Thats the first I've heard of it!!!). Our NFSA membership will be renewed (see below for possible changes in that organisation). A reminder that the pier matches start in April and that they need support if they are to continue came from Leo. The Website Secretary was asked to talk about all things forward slash, but what I do in private is my business! There will be a choice of colours/styles available soon for those that don't like/can't read white text. A few more additions to the links page too. Finally, if you're wondering what has happened to this page (where are the photos?), the rest of it is moving to an archive. It was getting a little long. Anyway, the meeting ended with a reminder for the AGM in 2009 on March 27th. Maybe someone will pay attention at that one.

Angling Unity

For those that haven't heard. The NFSA, along with the other major angling bodies, have agreed in principle to the formation of one body to represent all angling interests. For more see the Angling Unity website.

Albert Hudson

Another of our long-serving members, Albert Hudson, has passed away. He died on Wednesday evening, 12th March. Anyone who wishes to know funeral details should contact the Secretary. There will be people who visited Pontins who will have known him, along with the members of this Society. Our condolences to his family.

Bowling

Good news everyone! The Buddha failed to retain his crown in the bowling. Now for the bad news: Alan 'Ammo' Scarff took first place. The night was supported well, with twenty-seven taking part. Unfortunately too many had an off night. That left the door open for Alan to ease to victory. Chris came second, but under another name. According to the scoreboard he came third from last. Tim and Paul shared third place. If the photo comes out it will be added here.

Subscriptions

Membership fees are due by the end of March, £5 for juniors and over 60's, £10 for adults. For new members the cost is £6/£12, as it is for anyone who forgets to renew in time!

Cups and Trophies

These are due back by the end of February. Please return to Leo (our email is received by him if you need to contact him).

Bowling

Another attempt at a social gathering. Lets have some competition for the Buddha this time. Friday 29th February is the date. The price is £15 for adults (no children allowed!?). This is for two games of bowling plus food afterwards at Potters. Phone the Secretary to book your place.

AGM

A reminder of the date, Wednesday 26th March. Anything for inclusion needs to be with the Secretary in writing by Thursday 6th March.

Orford Trip

Saturday 5th April is our next visit to the island. Speak to Stan to book a place on the boat.

Gassy Cook Shield

The dates are set for the four Sundays in February. It will be awarded to the angler with the highest points total over those matches.

Casting Competition 2008

A provisional date of Sunday 28th September has been decided on for the casting this year. It fits nicely between Pontins Week and the start of the Winter matches on the beach. Some practice for those who will have forgotten how to cast without aiming at an island (or should that be tree?).

Gassy Cook Shield

The shield is awaiting it's silverware at the moment, but will be ready for collection at the next presentation. The four-legged series will be held on Sunday mornings, with the dates to be decided shortly.
