Proper Fish
Not content with being just a radio personality, Brian Watson thought he'd show the rest of us up with a 10lb cod. It was caught a few days after our trip to Orford, so must still have had the taste of Alan Scarff's bait in it's mouth! Wrong species, I know. A new personal best for Brian and one for the rest of us to be jealous of. The photo is on the left, as always.
Christmas Meal
The price for the meal on Wednesday 12th December has been set at £17.50. If you have yet to confirm your menu choice then you can phone the Secretary and leave a message.
Junior Festival 2008
The Committee has decided that a change of date might be a good way to get more juniors interested in the match, following the lack of numbers at this year's event. As the Carnival match seems to attract a lot of youngsters we will be holding the Junior Festival earlier in the year, possibly mid-September. It is worth a try at least.
Lowestoft Festival Cancelled
It seems to be a recurring theme this year. Our Festival match has clashed with a team event (one of which we were not aware) being held at the same venue. As at least half the usual field will be at the other match, it has been decided to cancel the match this year. Apologies to anyone who was interested in fishing. The date has already been set for 2008 (23rd November), so hopefully no other matches will be set to clash with us next year.

Pontins Week Thanks
Following another successful week at Pontins, the Marines Angling Club members who took part have contacted us to say thanks. As always it is much appreciated. Here is the email:
Hello to you all once again,
I would like to extend thanks to all the organisers and volunteers who made the Pakefield week a glowing success again this year. Due to an unforseen circumstance this year myself and Roy Pitcairn were unable to stay for the Thursday fishing and Presentation Evening but I trust everything went well yet again. I would like to once again extend thanks to all of you from The Marines Angling Club contingent who enjoyed themselves at Pakefield, Ken Buxey, Roy Pitcairn, Tony Libby, John Chidwick and Son, Tony May (Freshwater).
Kind regards,
Tight-lines,
Ken Buxey
While we are on the subject, a big thanks should go to those who ran the raffle. The L.S.A.S. coffers are once again grateful for the money raised at Pontins, the majority of which comes from the sale of raffle tickets.
Casting Competition
Only four took part in the casting arranged by Mark Sherwood. Of those four it was brother Lee who blasted a lead the furthest, 229 yards to be precise. Some of us can't see that far, never mind cast! Mark got his own back by winning the nearest-the-line. It is looking good for another casting day, same time next year. Hopefully we can get the word out sooner for a bigger attendance. There may be pictures in the near future...
LSAS On Your Mobile
A cut-down version of our website is now available, so if you have access to the internet on your phone you can keep up-to-date while on the beach! Only the most important information will be added and may look a little odd depending on your phone. There are a couple of links to mobile tide and weather sites too. You can try putting in the usual LSAS address if you like big downloads, but to get to the version made for the job go to www.lowestoftseaanglers.com/Mobile.html
Casting Competition
A field has been found safe enough for certain members to cast in. The competition will be on Saturday 22nd September. If you are interested then Mark Sherwood is the man to contact on Friday evening. The plan is to meet in Oulton Broad on Saturday morning around 8.30am, then travel to the field. It is just the other side of Rookery Park, don't aim at the flags!
Orford Trip
The trip is set for Saturday 24th November to the Narrows. The boat will leave the quay at 8.30am.
River Trip
Not many turned out on a chilly evening, but that didn't stop those of us who went having a good time. The Buddha had his man-bag for his drinks. Very fetching. Big Stan was busy collecting fares (see photo). Perri had the crew hot and bothered, they were threatening to tie him up by the end! Nesting grebes, marsh harriers and a barn owl all added to the experience of being out on the Broads.
ESFJC Meeting
The Eastern Sea Fisheries Joint Committee are holding a public meeting with local anglers on Wednesday July 11th at the Waterside holiday village in The Street, Corton. It will commence at 7:30pm in the upstairs room.
Agenda items will be:
- Proposal to develop a recreational sea angling (RSA) strategy for the ESFJC district.
- Possible introduction of bag limits for recreational sea anglers.
- Identify the level of support for the introduction of MLS’s for particular species within the District.
- Any other business.
River Trip
A trip up the river has been booked for Saturday 30th June. Meet at Oulton Broad 6.30pm for a 6.45pm departure. The trip will last about three hours. There is no longer drink available on the boat, so bring your own! A buffet will be provided. The cost is £7.50 for adults, £5 for juniors who are not members and free for junior members. Get your name to the Secretary to book a place and your share of the food!
Casting Competition
There will be a chance to test your gear on a field this Summer. There is no confirmed date as yet, it depends on when the field is free from crops. Sometime in August and somewhere near Halesworth is all you need to know at the moment. More details nearer the time. Hylton might win something!
Roy 'Gassy' Cook
One of the longest-ever serving members of the Lowestoft Sea Anglers passed away on Good Friday. There are photos in the Society history dating back to the Forties with Gassy included. The Committee will decide on a fitting way to remember him.
Thanks
A quick thanks to all those who contribute towards making this site the success it appears to be. Any photos, stories, or anything else you think might be of interest are always welcome.
AGM
A good turn-out considering the football was on! You will all be glad to know Leo is alive and well. The polish fumes from those cups must've scrambled his memory. Hylton, on the other hand, has no cups and no excuse!
Our President was in attendance, but hungry! The main talking points concerned changes in the rules and match fees. As of April the match fee for seniors will now be £1, 50p for juniors. Rule 3 will be altered to allow a second rod to be set-up and ready for use. This is primarily to minimise time lost when losing gear or if weed is a problem. It also allows a different type of set-up to be switched to quickly.
The Committee has a new member in Tim Harman. All other posts on the Committee were retained (including Leo). Our Chairman turned down the opportunity to put his "forward slash" into action.
The Tuesday Summer match venues will be decided on a week-to-week basis, so the Journal will be your best bet for finding them. The Freshwater matches look like they will be well attended this year, too well at some venues. As for this website, the mention of mobile phone access had Arthur excited. We WILL convert him to the dark side!
SACN News
As you probably know by now, the proposed increase in the size limit for bass has been put on hold. For the details on this story visit the SACN website. They also have the latest on the sea fishing licence debate. Another new website of interest is the East Anglian Recreational Sea Angler site. They are involved with fighting for anglers' rights on a local front.
Bowling
A rather disappointing 16 took part in the bowling at Potters. More disappointing was watching the Buddha celebrate every strike and spare he got. Which was a lot. In his second game he didn't leave one pin standing. So now we know what he does in his "spare" time, apart from the mystery tours of course. Having a bowling ball for a head is also an advantage! Less happy with his evening was Alan, who was hitting the wall as hard as the pins! Going down on all-fours was the low point. Lucky for him the Buddha wasn't watching. Unlucky for him we were! A reconstruction can be seen here. Big Stan gave the Buddha some competition in the first game at least. The food was again scoffed heartily. No dessert this time though? Or pink pins. There were some painted on the wall, maybe that was where Alan was aiming?

Fisheries Vision
We had an email forwarded to us regarding this. The easiest thing to do is point you to the SACN website and let you read for yourselves. There is a meeting at the Hotel Victoria on the 26th March if anyone is interested.
Cups and Trophies
Can all those lucky enough to have won cups/trophies please return them by the end of February to either Leo or the Secretary.
Prize Presentation
Still a way off yet (Saturday 19th May), but the menu is as follows:
Prawn cocktail or Minestrone soup
Beef or Chicken with potatoes and vegetables
Peach melba or Apple crumble and custard
Coffee and mints
Price is yet to be agreed.
Subscriptions
An early reminder that payment is due by the end of March. Renewal is still £10 for adults, £5 for juniors and over 60’s. With the insurance mentioned below it must be a bargain! New members still pay £12/£6.
NFSA Insurance
As you will have seen in the newsletter our members cover for third party liability when fishing anywhere in the U.K. has been updated. You are covered regardless of whether the Club are involved when you fish.
Bowling Night Date Changed
I was a bit hasty in announcing the date, which is now Saturday 3rd March. Meet at Potters 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start, with the buffet at 10.00pm. Price is £12 each. Sorry if I have ruined your plans!
AGM
If you have anything to bring up at the AGM (Wednesday 28th March), please let the Secretary know in writing before the 14th March. We don't want any nasty surprises!
Bowling Night
Another evening of Pink-Pin bowling is set for Saturday 24th February. Not booked yet, so wait for the newsletter for more.
Orford Trip
The trip to Orford will hopefully be on Saturday 31st March. Again the newsletter will have confirmation.
