Lowestoft Carnival Match 2005

The weather on the evening of Friday 12th August was glorious (see photo, left), unlike the forecast that had been given during the previous days. 43 anglers, including 11 juniors (the youngest was 5), turned up for the match. Unfortunately fish were few and far between and a lot of those caught were undersize and had to be returned, but everyone entered into the spirit of the occasion and stuck at it. In the end only 7 anglers had fish to bring to the scales and each angler only had one fish. Out of the 7, 4 were juniors! Numbers were down a fair bit this year with the lack of vehicle access to the pier being cited by many as a reason. The result was that with a sole of 11oz, 13yr old Adam Whall walked away with the overall first prize of a top of the range Beach Caster rod, the Junior prize of a rod and reel and £30 prize money, not bad for an evenings work. Adam is no stranger to the Carnival match as last year he picked up the trophy for the smallest sizeable fish to be caught. 2nd place went to C DeBlock with a sole of 8½oz, for which he won a reel and line and £30. 3rd was R Attreed with a pout of 7½oz, winning a beach rod holdall and £20. 4th was Mick George with a 6oz pout winning a trace wallet and £20. Runner up in the Juniors was a young girl, T Kent, with a pout of 5¾oz winning a fishing umbrella and £15. This years trophy plus a reel case and hook wallet for the smallest sizeable fish went to a junior, J Dunn with an eel of 2¾oz. All the prizes for the match were very kindly donated by Sam Hook Sport Ltd. for which everyone was very appreciative. As well as the match, a raffle was held with prizes donated by local companies and individuals, and this, added to the match fees, came to just over £200 which will go to the Carnival beneficiary, Lowestoft Hospital. Representatives from Lowestoft Hospital and the Carnival Committee were present and the prizes were presented by Lowestoft's Young Ambassadors, Stephanie Bird and Michael Robbins. The committee of the Lowestoft Sea Angling Society, who organised and ran the match, would like to thank all those who turned up, donated prizes or just gave their support to this annual event.

Lowestoft Festival 2005

56 anglers took part in this year's festival at Hopton on Sunday 27th November. There was a strong wind off the land with a reasonable swell running, and the day was filled with wintery showers. There were fish all along the match stretch with lots of cod, whiting, pout, dab and the odd flounder brought to the scales. Many undersize fish were returned to the sea. The winner, Dave Reed, had 2 cod, 5 whiting and a pout in his bag. Second place went to John Lawrence, who caught 11 whiting, 2 dab and a rockling. Third was Mark Pinder with 2 cod and 5 whiting. The pairs winners, Dave Reed and his son Nick, had over 2lb more than the second placed pair. The winner took home over £300, whilst second won just under £200.

Lowestoft Junior Festival 2005

There were seven juniors who turned out for the festival match. The day was very windy but dry and the sea was very rough. Before the match started the waves were breaking over the rocks near the lifeboat station and the wind was blowing the spray half-way across the pier. This did not put the kids off, they were still very keen to wet a line. For the first two hours it was too rough to fish the outside so they all made do with fishing on the inside and two rockling were caught. By now the wind had turned a little more to the land and started to drop away and they noticed that an adult had just landed a codling from the sea side. So they all started to fish on the outside, this produced one codling and made the kids as keen as ever right until the end of the match. Connor Lowe-Szomjas (11) had a codling of 1lb 10oz (pictured left) and a rockling for 1lb 14oz, and Reece King (8) had a rockling for 2½oz. Prizes were donated again by Sam Hook Sports, the winner picked up a reel with line and second place had a seat box and line. The other prizes were drawn for and they all went away with a prize and a smile on their faces.

White Horse Inn Championship 2005

32 fished on Hopton beach. The sea had a very good colour to it and quite a bit of chop, but it did not live up to expectations. Andrew Crossan had the winning bag with two cod, two whiting and a dab for 5lb 2oz. Second place went to Roy Clarke who had a cod and a rockling for 2lb 14oz. Third was Tony Thomas, who had a cod, two whiting and a dab for 2lb 2½oz. Andrew and Tony were the section winners.
