Labour Party Cup 2008

Pakefield was the venue for the first match of the year. There were just 24 anglers fishing on what turned out to be a nice fine day after a sharp frost in the morning. The fish did not turn up as expected and it turned out to be a very scratchy match. Only dabs and rockling made up the weights except for first and second places, who both had a codling in their bags. Just under half weighed in.

Spring Open 2008

The Spring Open was fished at Pakefield beach on Sunday 13th April. Not many turned up for the match due to a clash of fixtures, but those who did fished enjoyed the day with each angler catching fish. The winner was Tony Thomas, he drew the end peg and caught six pout during the early part of the match before catching a 4lb cod on his last cast of the day for a total weight of 5lb 1½oz. Second was Lee Sherwood who had two whiting, seven pout and a 2lb 9oz codling for a weight of 5lb. At the draw in the morning Paul Carter suggested that only first and second place be paid out due to low numbers, this was agreed. Paul then weighed in a whiting, a pout and a cod for 3lb 10oz and came third! It is rumoured Mr Watson had a cod on when he returned to his rod after the weigh-in...

Lowestoft Carnival 2008

Forty anglers took part in the Carnival match on the South Pier. The entry fees and raffle raised £220 for N.S.H.E.B.A., so thanks to all those that participated. The fishing was not great, but a number of species were caught. Herring had been showing and were in evidence again. Darren George had a wrasse as part of his catch. The winner was Kevin Murray who had two flounders, a sole and an eel for 1lb 10oz. Second was Nathan Pickering with four pouts for 1lb 9oz. Darren added two pouts to his wrasse to take third place. The top junior was Bradley Thorpe and the shield for smallest sizable fish went to John Cowell with a 2oz dogfish. Almost all the fish were returned alive after the match. Thanks go to Sam Hooks, who provided all the prizes for the match, and to all those that donated prizes for the raffle.
